Sheriff Don Lolley said 30-year-old Deputy Clifton Spears underwent surgery at Doctors Hospital in Augusta, Georgia, and is listed in critical condition today. He suffered third-degree burns to his face, chest, arms and lungs.

Spears was taken to a hospital in Meridian, Mississippi, before being airlifted to Georgia.
