Six inmates, including a man accused of capital murder, escaped through holes cut in the ceiling of the Van Buren County jail early Tuesday, and some of them were later believed to have stolen a newspaper carrier’s car.
The murder suspect had escaped from the same jail in February. The five men who fled with him this time were awaiting trial on charges ranging from rape to aggravated assault to drug possession.
Tuesday’s escape went unnoticed for at least four hours, Chief Deputy Todd Hudspeth of the sheriff’s office said. The six men were discovered missing during a 7 a. m. shift change, when a routine check is done.
