Cause of Death: Motley died from an injury sustained while saving a drowning child.

Even the family is a little cloudy on what exactly happened, but they do know that Captain Byron Motley died while saving the boy from a pool during the family’s reunion.
Motley was a 28-year veteran of the Murfreesboro Police Department, and he was promoted to captain only weeks ago. In addition, he was an adjunct faculty member at MTSU, teaching criminal justice courses.
But, Captain Motley lost his life at a family reunion in Brentwood on Saturday night....
