N.Y. officer badly injured in crash responding to call

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. A Hempstead police officer heading to an emergency call was badly injured last night when his car was struck by a driver at a traffic intersection, police said.

The officer, whose name was not released, was hospitalized at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola with five broken ribs, face trauma and a possible broken ankle, police said.
