(MEMPHIS, Tenn.) -- A man who fired at a police officer during a tense standoff in a Raleigh apartment complex was taken into custody peacefully Friday afternoon.
The gunman, whose name was not released, was facing possible charges of aggravated assault or commitment to a psychiatric facility.
Police were called to the apartment in the 3800 block of Advantage Way near James Road and N. Highland about 9:10 a.m. When they heard a shot coming from the apartment and were unable to get the occupant to come out, they called the TACT unit, police spokesman Officer LaTanya Able said.
Several apartment units were evacuated, and hostage negotiators tried to convince the man to surrender. During the six-hour standoff, he fired several shots, including one at a police officer, Able said.
He gave himself up to police about 3:30 p.m.
