threatening woman with knife

(PHILADELPHIA) -- A 21-year-old man who allegedly threatened a woman with a knife was shot and critically wounded by a police officer Monday, according to authorities.

Officer Timothy Wade shot Duane McGowan once in the hip in an alley behind his home in the 200 block of Bridge Street at about 3 p.m., police said.

Responding to a call about screams heard in the area, officers from the 15th District discovered McGowan holding a woman, who was not identified, at knifepoint.

Upon seeing police the suspect fled into an alley where Wade shot him, police said. Wade has been transferred to administrative duties while, as is standard procedure, the Internal Affairs Bureau investigates the shooting.

McGowan remains in critical condition in Temple University Hospital.
