Ohio officer indicted on three charges of sexual misconduct

(LICKING COUNTY, Ohio) -- A Newark, Ohio police officer has been indicted on sex charges involving a woman and a girl, authorities said yesterday.

Patrolman Christopher Maring, 36, was indicted by a grand jury on one count each of gross sexual imposition involving the woman and girl and a misdemeanor count of sexual imposition involving the girl, Licking County Prosecutor Robert Becker said.

Acting Newark Police Chief Al Zellner said Maring was the subject of a two- month investigation by the Licking County Sheriff's Office.

Maring joined the police department in 1996. Neither Zellner nor Becker would elaborate on the circumstances of the accusations against Maring.

Maring was placed on paid leave, Zellner said.

His arraignment on the charges is tentatively set for Nov. 27 in Licking County Common Pleas Court, Becker said.
