Search in New Mexico for suspected car thief who fired at officer

PoliceOne Staff Report
(ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.) -- Authorities have used police dogs and search helicopters in a manhunt for a car theft suspect who allegedly shot at a state police officer Wednesday night.

It was not disclosed if the officer, whose name was not released, had been injured, but shots did strike the police car, according to the Albuquerque Journal.

At about 9:30 p.m. the officer tried to stop a suspected stolen vehicle near Alameda and Wyoming NE, the dispatcher told the Journal. The suspect fired shots at the police car and sped off. The suspect crashed the vehicle into another car near Louisiana and Alameda and fled south, on foot, into a field.

The Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department, the State Police and the Albuquerque police responded to the scene.
