Former assistant chief is investigated in Louisiana
[NACHITOCHES, LA]

(NATCHITOCHES, La.) -- How to pursue embezzlement allegations against former Assistant Police Chief James Donaho will hinge on a legislative auditor's review of a Police Department audit, city officials say.

Donaho resigned Oct. 31 after voluntarily informing officials that he had misused public money, according to a statement released Nov. 2 by the Mayor's Office. The case was turned over to the Natchitoches Parish District Attorney's Office.

No charges have been filed, said Danny Hall, district attorney's investigator. But if investigators find that criminal charges are warranted, Donaho could be charged with theft and malfeasance, officials said.

Natchitoches Mayor Wayne McCullen has declined to release the amount of missing money. However, Hall estimated it could be as much as $50,000 over a three-year period.

So far, only Donaho appears to be involved, Hall said.

"The investigation is circled around him at this particular time," he said.

Hall described Donaho, a 20-plus-year police veteran, as being remorseful for his actions. Donaho also has been "very cooperative" in the investigation, he said.

"This case should have closure very quickly," Hall said.
