Patrol officer faces public drunkenness charges
after falling in pond while off-duty
[INDIANAPOLIS, IN]

(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.) -- A police officer faces preliminary charges of public intoxication after falling into a Northwestside pond where he had been fishing.

Douglas M. Sweeney, 52, who lives on the Northeastside, was arrested by Marion County sheriff's deputies on the afternoon of Dec. 2. He was released on his own recognizance and is scheduled for an initial court appearance Dec 4.

Sweeney's marked police car and police equipment were taken away from him by a supervisor, according to a police report.

Deputies said Sweeney was off duty when he was fishing in a pond at Rick's Cafe Boatyard, 4050 Dandy Trail, around 1 p.m. Dec. 2.

A witness told deputies that Sweeney fell into the pond, climbed out, put his fishing poles in his police car, got out of the car and fell back into the pond, cutting the back of his head.

Sweeney smelled strongly of alcohol, and an empty 12-pack of beer was found in the car, the report said. Deputies said a water bottle found in the car may have been filled with vodka. Sweeney was sent to Wishard Memorial Hospital for treatment of his cuts before he was jailed.

The city policeman is assigned to patrol the Downtown district.
