Man surrenders after 8-hour standoff with police
[FRESNO, CA]

PoliceOne Staff Report
(FRESNO, Calif.) -- A man suspected of shooting his friend in the back was arrested on Monday, his birthday, after an eight-hour standoff with officers.

Gilbert Machate was arrested on his 24th birthday about 8:30 p.m. on Dec. 4th, Lt. Andy Hall told the Fresno Bee.

Machate, who had apparently shot himself in the leg, was taken away in an ambulance, Hall told the paper.

"I accidentally shot my friend. I didn't mean to. I didn't do anything," Hall quoted Machate as saying as he was being taken away.

Machate allegedly shot his friend during an argument over his girlfriend. The friend was not identified. Police did say that he was listed in critical condition in the hospital but is expected to survive his wound.

Police responded to the shooting call and first removed the friend from the house, but Machate kept officers at bay when he held the gun to his head threatening to kill himself and police.

"He threatened to kill himself, and he said if officers entered the house he would shoot them," Hall told the paper. "The suspect would talk to us and then hang up. He was very despondent, often crying."

Eventually Machate gave up and agreed to come out after police detonated two percussion grenades near his house.

"We just surrounded the house and waited for him to calm down and let his adrenaline go down," Hall told the Bee. "He knew we weren't going to go anywhere."
