Deputy moonlighting as mobile home
park manager is suspended for three days
[TAMPA, FL]

PoliceOne Staff Report
(TAMPA, Fla.) -- A Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputy has been suspended for three days after he ignored an order prohibiting him from managing a mobile home park while wearing his uniform.

Deputy Charles D. Maye, who manages the Mi Amigo Mobile Home Park in his time off, was told by supervisors not to wear his uniform or drive his patrol car while performing his second job. The Sheriff's department told the St. Petersburg Times that there was concern that the deputy used his authority as a law enforcement officer to intimidate his tenants.

The suspension comes after an eight-month investigation by Internal Affairs into allegations that Maye assaulted one of his tenants while investigating a shooting at the trailer park in November of 1999. The results of the investigation were released last week, the Times reported.

On Nov. 20, 1999, Maye and another deputy investigated a shooting at the mobile home park during which Maye allegedly assaulted Ancelmo Castillo-Badillo, who he believed to be the culprit.

Castillo claimed that Maye barged into his trailer home punched him and threw him to the ground. Castillo told the Times that he sustained cuts to his elbow and bruises on his face.

"I wrestled him to the ground," Maye told Internal Affairs. "I probably hit him in the ribs or kidneys with my hands, trying to get his hands out."

It was determined that the deputy did not use excessive force.
