Accused rapist shot
in face after controlled chase
[HANOVER, MA]

PoliceOne Staff Report
(HANOVER, Mass.) -- An accused rapist from Tennessee was shot in the face last night by police after a controlled chase through rush hour traffic, according to authorities.

Benjamin Lee Peterson, 38, who was wanted for aggravated rape in Tennessee, fled police when they tried to serve him with the out-of-state warrant.

According to police accounts, Peterson drove away from officers in his 1993 Ford Ranger pickup truck through the town of Hanover. He continued on in a "controlled" pursuit, police told the Boston Herald, to Route 53.

Once onto Route 53 Peterson's increasingly erratic driving caused him to lose control of the truck and roll the vehicle down an embankment.

Peterson was shot when he got out of the truck and waved a .22-caliber handgun at police. At least one round shot by either a state trooper or a Hanover police officer struck the suspect in the face. It is not clear how many shots hit Peterson, the Boston Herald reported.

Peterson was taken to Boston Medical Center where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries. He was charged with 17 violations of the law, including three counts of armed assault with intent to murder, police said.
