Suspect who grabbed officer's gun
dies in hail of gunfire
[Detroit, MI]

PoliceOne Staff Report
(DETROIT) -- A suspect being interviewed during a stolen car investigation grabbed an officer's gun and engaged in a running shootout with police Wednesday before a hail of bullets and shotgun blasts brought him down.

Sharone Matthews, 21, was being interviewed in his home when he grabbed the officer's gun. The interviewing officers ran from the house and called for backup. Minutes later Matthews began firing at them and fled.

Matthews repeatedly ignored officers' pleas to drop the weapon, freeze, and put his hands up, authorities said.

Ten officers were involved in the gunfire. One suffered a graze wound, another a broken leg, according to police.

The Detroit Free press quoted the dead man's father as stating that his son suffered from mental illness.
