Plainclothes officers shoot suspect after
wild shoot out in pizza shop
[Philadelphia, PA]

PoliceOne Staff Report
(PHILADELPHIA) -- Two plainclothes police officers staking out a pizza shop that had frequently been the target for holdups exchanged gunfire with a suspected robber after he critically wounded the restaurant's owner.

Officers Calvin White and Tracy Turk, found Alim Swinton, 22, hiding under cement steps at 1413 Barringer Street after they chased him from Holiday Pizza at about 8:20 p.m. on Dec. 15, according to Philadelphia police spokeswoman Lt. Susan Slawson.

Police contradicted Philadelphia press reports that a 13-year-old boy working in the pizza shop had used his cell phone to call police.

"The police were surveilling the store. We witnessed the guy [Swinton] go into the store," said Slawson. "They saw a struggle taking place; when police walked up to the store the guy started shooting; the police ran for cover and they started shooting back."

Turk and White continued to exchange gunfire with the man as they chased him from the store. Swinton was shot three times, police said.

Aristofanos Fakos, 40, the storeowner, was shot three times by the suspect, according to Slawson. Both men were taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center where they were listed in critical condition on Saturday.

Swinton was arrested and charged with attempt murder, aggravated assault and robbery and other related charges.

The department's Internal Affairs Division is conducting a routine investigation of the shooting.
