Suspected murderer captured
after shootout with police
[Bridgeport, CN]

PoliceOne Staff Report
(BRIDGEPORT, Conn.) -- A suspected murderer was wounded by police on Dec. 15 during a shootout at a Central Avenue and Boston Avenue stoplight.

Police captured Clifford Brown, 27, who is suspected of murder, after a foot chase.

About 7:45 p.m. on Friday Evon A. Brown, 24, who is not related to the suspect, was stopped at a traffic light at the corner of Boston and Central Avenues.

According to police, Clifford Brown approached the car and began firing at the driver's side door and continued to fire as Evon Brown got out of the car.

Bridgeport officers on patrolling in a vehicle saw the shooting and radioed for assistance. When they tried to arrest the suspect he pointed a gun at the officer, police said. Before Brown could shoot, the officer fired one round striking the suspect in the leg. He was captured on nearby Bell Street and charged with murder, attempted murder and unlawful discharge of a firearm.

Evon Brown was pronounced dead on arrival at Bridgeport Hospital.

The officers involved have been taken off patrol duty, standard procedure after a shooting, according to Joe Gresko, public information coordinator for the police.
