(NEW YORK ) -- An undercover cop working a drug sting shot an East Village man in the chest when the suspect tried to rob him at knifepoint, police said yesterday. Oswaldo Vasquez, 43, of Ave. D was in stable condition at Bellevue Hospital after the Saturday night incident on E. Third St. A police source described Vasquez as a "steerer" - someone who directs drug customers to dealers.
When the cop asked Vasquez where he could buy heroin, the suspect allegedly pulled a knife and asked, "You got money?"
The officer, who was not identified, pulled his gun just after 9 p.m. and fired once. Police recovered a knife at the scene and charged Vasquez with attempted armed robbery.
