while executing meth warrant
[Moreno Valley, CA]

PoliceOne Staff Report
(MORENO VALLEY, Calif.) -- Police fatally shot a man and wounded his girlfriend on Dec. 30 while serving a search warrant on the suspect's home. Ruben Vega, 24, was shot and killed as he reached under his mattress for his gun when deputies busted open the door to his Red Mahogany Street home, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's office.

Deputies found a semiautomatic handgun and ammunition under his mattress, Sgt. Mark Lohman told the Press-Enterprise.

Vega's girlfriend, Melanie Florez, 21, was also hit but was not seriously injured.

Sheriff's deputies found paraphernalia and what Lohman called a "small amount" of methamphetamine in the suspects home.

The name of the deputy who killed Vega has not been released, but the sheriff's office did say that he had been placed on routine administrative leave pending an investigation.
