(VANDALIA, Fla.) -- Miami County's only four-legged law enforcer lent a paw early Wednesday morning to the Vandalia police.

When four people ran from police at the scene of an apparent break-in shortly after 4 a.m. at the VFW, 4170 Old Springfield Road, Vandalia police called for help from a couple of canines - Barry, handled by Miami County Deputy Tina Waymire, and Kain, handled by Clayton Police Officer Brandon Combs.

Barry and Kain joined the Vandalia police, and within minutes, the dogs struck pay dirt, Barry sniffing and lunging toward a lean-to filled with cut wood in which a suspect had hidden.

Kain tracked two more suspects into a nearby field.

"Barry was just going ape. Then they could see someone in (the wood pile), but he wasn't responding," Miami County Chief Deputy Joe Mahan said.

Barry jumped in, paws first, and tugged at the person's coat, still with little response.

When that ripped, Barry took the person by the arm.

"Then (the person) decided to go with the program," Mahan said.

Police had apprehended the fourth person.

Shan Collins, 26, John Webb, 27, and a juvenile, all from Columbus and Robert Blythe, 27, of Heath were all booked on suspicion of breaking and entering.

"Barry did good," Mahan said.
