(BATON ROUGE, La) -- Sheriff's deputies arrested a city police officer Thursday after he allegedly hit his ex-girlfriend during an argument.

City police spokesman Cpl. Don Kelly said Officer William Brown Jr., 38, was relieved of duty immediately after his arrest. He has been placed on unpaid leave while the Internal Affairs Division investigates the incident.

Sheriff's Lt. Darrell O'Neal said Brown's ex-girlfriend was at an apartment at 12400 Jefferson Highway about 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Sonya Frederick, 24, was in the bathroom when she heard keys in the door. Brown then appeared at the bathroom door, O'Neal said.

They argued for a while before he allegedly punched her in the head, O'Neal said.

He left the apartment after the attack, O'Neal said.

While deputies were responding to a call from the apartment, Brown went to Kleinpeter substation, O'Neal said.

Brown waited there for detectives, who interviewed and arrested him, O'Neal said.

Kelly said Police Chief Pat Englade met with Brown on Friday afternoon and sent him to Internal Affairs to be questioned about the incident.

At the end of the day Friday, Englade put Brown on unpaid leave, Kelly said.

Brown, of 12727 Coursey Blvd., Apt. 2103, was booked into Parish Prison with simple battery and unauthorized entry of an inhabited dwelling, booking records show.

Brown was released on a $7,500 bond after about three hours in jail, booking records show.

Brown could not be reached for comment.

He has been a police officer since 1997 and was working in the Uniform Patrol Division at Second District, Kelly said.
