(ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.) -- A man was fatally shot in the parking lot of a food market at Wyoming and Paseo del Norte NE Thursday night following an exchange of gunfire with a police officer, Albuquerque Police Chief Jerry Galvin said.

Galvin spoke to reporters at 10:45 p.m. about the shooting. He said the man died on the way to a hospital.

Names of the man and the two APD officers involved weren't released.

Neither of the officers was injured, Galvin told reporters.

The shooting at the shopping center apparently started with a confrontation between the man who was shot and another man, Galvin told reporters.

The second individual was gone by the time police responded to the disturbance call, he said.

When officers confronted the first man in front of Smith's Food & Drug, Galvin said the individual began arguing with police. He then reached into his sports utility vehicle, pulled out a gun and fired twice at the officers.

One or both of the officers returned fire, hitting the man, Galvin said.

The case is under investigation, he said.
