(BERGEN COUNTY, NJ) -- Two sheriff's officers escaped serious injury Wednesday night when a motorist they pulled over during a routine traffic stop dragged them 30 feet as he attempted to flee in a Volkswagen, authorities said.

Sheriff's Officers Gene Kolich and Kevin Pell were dragged along Market Street in Saddle Brook after they leaned into the car to question Robert Silverman, authorities said. The officers were treated for minor cuts to their hands at Hackensack University Medical Center and released.

Silverman, of 398 Passaic Ave. in Lodi, was wanted on outstanding warrants for violating conditions of his parole, Sheriff's Department spokesman Bob Nesoff said. Silverman, 35, most recently was wanted by River Edge police for driving while intoxicated and eluding arrest, Nesoff said.

Following the 7:45 p.m. incident Wednesday, Silverman was charged with aggravated assault, eluding officers, and resisting arrest, Nesoff said. He was being held on $ 100,000 bail Thursday at the Bergen County Jail. No court date has been set.
