(FRESNO, Calif.) -- A man fleeing from a police stop was run over by a Fresno police cruiser as he tried to escape Monday afternoon.

Police did not identify the suspect but said he is a California Department of Corrections escapee listed as armed and dangerous, Fresno police Lt. John Fries said.

The accident occurred about 2:20 p.m. after police stopped a suspect in the same car near Valeria Street and McKenzie Avenue. Police thought another man in the car was involved in a felony, Fries said.

As police worked to detain the suspect in the car, the passenger fled, running into a vacant field. As officers pursued the fleeing passenger, he changed direction and veered into the path of a police department cruiser.

The unidentified officer driving the police cruiser attempted to stop in time but slid into the fleeing passenger through a pool of mud and water, Fries said.

The escapee was listed in serious condition at University Medical Center on Monday night.
