Suit against gun industry allowed to go forward
[Chicago]

February 15, 2001
(CHICAGO) -– A judge has ruled that a lawsuit brought by the family of a slain Chicago police officer and other gunshot victims can proceed.

Judge Jennifer Duncan-Brice did not rule on the merits of the claim that guns constitute a public nuisance. Another judge in Cook County dismissed a similar suit by the city of Chicago, and a state appeals court is expected to resolve the disagreement.

The plaintiffs include the family of Officer Michael Ceriale, who was gunned down at the Robert Taylor Homes project, and four other people who were wounded or killed by gunfire. A jury last week failed to agree on a verdict in the trial of a young man accused of killing Ceriale.
