Domestic violence suspect shot by police
[SUNNYVALE, Calif.]

February 27, 2001
(SUNNYVALE, Calif.) – Police officers say that they shot and killed a man suspected of beating his wife after he pulled a semi-automatic handgun from his waistband and pointed it at them.

The officers had gone to Daniel McGovern’s apartment complex after a hospital reported that his wife had been admitted with a fractured skull, apparently the result of a beating. McGovern returned home some time after the officers arrived.

McGovern, 41, met his wife, a Ukrainian national, on a commercial matchmaking trip. The couple was featured in a report on the CBS news show “48 Hours” about marriages between American men and women from the former Soviet Union.
