(CHESTER, S.C.) -- A man serving a one-year sentence for failure to pay child support hanged himself in his cell late Saturday.

David C. McCarty, 41, of 107 Berry St. was found by guards shortly after 11 p.m. hanging by a piece of T-shirt-like material. He had served about 6 months of his sentence, according to Lt. Furber Gregory of the Chester City Police.

Though the jail is run by the county, it is located within the city limits. The State Law Enforcement Division was called to send a crime scene unit to assist with forensic evidence, according to an agency spokesman.

Chester County Coroner Watson Wright said an autopsy conducted Sunday at Newberry County Hospital found no evidence of foul play, Wright said. McCarty's death has been ruled a suicide.

Chester County Sheriff Robbie Benson said he couldn't discuss the details of the case because his agency was not handling the investigation and he was waiting for its results.
