Police asked to ticket water hogs

March 2, 2001
(MIAMI) – Police departments in South Florida have a new task – monitoring water use.

Officials at the South Florida Water Management District is urging a zero-tolerance policy. They say police officers should give tickets to anyone caught violating restrictions on such things as watering lawns or washing cars, with no friendly warnings.

The area is in a severe drought with Phase 2 restrictions on water use in force. But officials say that the amount of water consumed is down only 5 percent from last year, and more severe Phase 3 restrictions may be needed if the Phase 2 ones are not enforced.
