March 2, 2001 (CHICAGO) - A lawyer involved in a landmark case that freed a man from death row has become a homicide victim himself. The accused killer is his mentally ill son.
Richard Cunningham, 56, was stabbed Thursday afternoon in his Chicago home. Investigators say that 26-year-old Jesse Cunningham gave a statement implicating himself.
The elder Cunningham was a defense lawyer and former public defender. He represented Ronald Jones, who was freed in 1999 after a decade on Death Row. Recently, Cunningham represented a man who says he confessed to a drug-related murder after being tortured during questioning.
