(ST. LOUIS) -- Joseph R. Rakonick, a retired police sergeant who served more than 35 years with the St. Louis Police Department, died Wednesday (March 14, 2001) at his home in Spanish Lake of complications from back surgery and a heart condition. He was 89.

Mr. Rakonick was born in St. Louis. He worked as a shoemaker at the old Hamilton-Brown Shoe Co. in St. Louis in the 1930s.
