Alleged mob victim's son commits suicide: Boston

March 22, 2001
(BOSTON) – A man who threw himself under a subway train has been identified as the son of a safecracker allegedly killed by Boston mobsters in 1983.

Johnny Barrett, 36, jumped from the platform at the South Station subway stop during the evening rush hour Monday. His father, Arthur “Bucky” Barrett, disappeared in 1983, but his body was only found last year with several others in a grave under a highway.

Investigators believe that the father was killed at the orders of fugitive mob chief James “Whitey” Bulger. Allegedly, Bulger wanted to take the proceeds of a bank job Arthur Barrett had carried out.

The other Barrett son, Paul, committed suicide in the same manner in 1990 at a different station on the same line.
