March 22, 2001 (CHICAGO) – A call to 911 was not enough to save a Chicago teacher’s life.
On Wednesday, an employee found Wardella Winchester’s body at a recycling center. Her hands and head were bound with duct tape.
Winchester vanished Friday morning, kidnapped as she prepared to leave for work at Carver High School on the city’s South Side. She made a call for help early Saturday, apparently from the trunk of a car using a cell phone she had concealed from her abductors.
Investigators say that the teacher may not have been deliberately killed. Winchester suffered from high blood pressure and could have had a fatal heart attack. They have questioned a relative who allegedly stole thousands of dollars and cocaine from a dealer.
