Student monk charged with killing nun, Miami

March 27, 2001
(MIAMI) – A candidate monk at an Eastern Catholic school has been charged with killing a nun who was an administrator there.

Investigators with the Miami-Dade police department say that Mykhaylo Kofel, 18, admitted the crime Monday after being questioned.

Sister Michelle Lewis’s body was found Sunday in the convent at Holy Cross Academy when members of the congregation became concerned about her failure to appear at Mass.

Kofel reportedly came to Florida from the Ukraine four years ago to study at Holy Cross in order to become a priest in the Byzantine Catholic church.
