PORTAGE -- Portage police said Robert A. Funke hopped on his Yard Machine
lawn tractor and headed down Central Avenue, near Sand Avenue, at 5 mph.
But Officer Dennis Bailey saw the tractor weaving in the travel lane at 5
p.m. Wednesday, so he stopped Funke, police said. The officer said he
asked for a driver's license from Funke, 76, of 5309 Clem Road, but Funke
said he didn't need one to operate a lawn tractor.
The officer observed signs of alcohol consumption and had Funke perform
field sobriety tests and a breath test, police said. His blood alcohol
level tested at 0.14 percent, more than the 0.1 percent standard of
intoxication in Indiana, according to police.
Funke was arrested on a drunken driving charge and his lawn tractor was
impounded. A relative of Funke told The Times that Funke was on his way
home when arrested.
