Cops: Rental company responsible for surgeon, Los Angeles

March 29, 2001
(LOS ANGELES) – The Los Angeles Police Dept. says that a rental company’s carelessness was responsible for the arrest of a Florida surgeon.

Dr. Angelo Gousse, a urologist and professor at the University of Miami, is seeking damages from the city and police department, claiming that his hands were injured while he was in custody and that has a result he is no longer able to operate. Gousse, a native of Haiti, also charges that the arrest was racially motivated.

Gousse rented a car from the Budget company during a trip to Los Angeles for a medical conference in February. Police say that the company switched plates on two cars in its fleet without recording the change – so that the car Gousse was driving had a plate number that matched a car that was reported stolen last year.
