Sting rewards courteous drivers, Calif.

March 29, 2001
(BUENA PARK, Calif.) - A California police department is using an undercover operation to reward good drivers as well as bad.

On Wednesday, 50 motorists were pulled over at an intersection in Buena Vista. Nine drivers who halted to allow a detective dressed in shorts and a T-shirt to cross the street were given $20 gift certificates and sent on their way. The rest got citations for not making way for a pedestrian at a marked crosswalk.

Sgt. Gary Jackson said the department has received many complaints about drivers failing to make way for pedestrians and decided that some education was needed.
