Recruits sickened by fumes at police academy

April 3, 2001
(BOSTON) – The Boston Police Department academy remained closed today while investigators tried to determine what sickened 27 recruits.

Officer Kevin Jones, a department spokesman, said that the fumes might have been carbon monoxide but nothing has been ruled out.

The recruits and a custodian were treated at local hospitals Monday after they complained of nausea and eye irritation. All were quickly released.
