April 3, 2001 (DALLAS) – Dallas officials hope that new high-performance police cars will help officers catch speeders and keep the highways safe.
The eight high-performance Chevrolet Camaro Z28s are hitting the streets this week after being equipped with overhead lights and other police accouterments. Police Chief Terrell Bolton said that the Camaros will usually be deployed on highways where their acceleration may be needed. He also said they will be used as pace cars, and any driver passing one will be risking a ticket.
Most traffic officers now use motorcycles or Dallas’s standard police car, the Ford Crown Victoria. The cost of the Camaros, $31,000 each, is being funded by federal grants.
