April 12, 2001 (BOSTON) - A transit police officer has been charged with assaulting a handcuffed man who was allegedly beaten so hard that his jaw and nose were broken and he lost four teeth.
William Smith, 45, of Buzzards Bay was suspended without pay by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority after his indictment Wednesday. He had been on an administrative leave.
The victim, a firefighter in Rhode Island, was part of a group of people who had been at a basketball game in Boston in April 2000. Investigators say the Rhode Islanders got on a commuter train at South Station and behaved so badly that a conductor called police and asked to have them removed at the Back Bay Station, less than 5 minutes away.
Smith allegedly marched the firefighter off the train and then beat him repeatedly with his billy club after the man escaped his grasp on the platform, continuing his blows after the man was handcuffed.
