Suspected killer of officer arraigned
[Seattle, WA]

April 10, 2001
(SEATTLE) -- An 18-year-old has pleaded innocent to the killing of a police officer who died in a confrontation with four young men while he was on patrol.

Charles Champion’s arraignment took place Monday in a courtroom packed with officers from the Des Moines Police Department who had worked with Steven Underwood. Court officers formed a wall to separate the officers from Champion’s family.

Investigators say that Underwood encountered Champion on March 7 and realized that he was wanted on several warrants. He radioed for backup, and two officers who arrived a few minutes later found him lying on the sidewalk shot in the head and thigh.
