Guard may have helped three inmates escape
[Santa Fe, NM]

April 10, 2001
(SANTA FE, N.M.) – The company that operates the jail in Santa Fe County believes that the escape of three inmates being held on federal drug charges was an inside job.

. Officials at Cornell Companies say they are still trying to determine how the three fugitives got the hacksaw and hammer they used to saw through a metal bar and break an inch-thick window Saturday. Vicente Tijerina, 30, Louis Santana, 41, and Rudolfo Garcia, 27, who were being held on federal drug charges, are still missing.

Cornell has run the 670-bed Santa Fe County Detention Center for the past three years. The company faces a lawsuit filed by three women who say they were sexually assaulted by a guard last year.
