Inmates riot at Mass. jail
[Dartmouth, MA]

April 16, 2001
(DARTMOUTH, Mass.) – Three corrections officers were injured in a riot at a county jail in Massachusetts, including one who was taken hostage.

Sheriff Thomas Hodgson said the trouble began shortly after 3 p.m. Sunday in a recreation area in the medium-security unit and spread to the rest of the unit. About 300 inmates are believed to have become involved in breaking windows and setting a fire. The disturbance was quelled in about an hour.

The hostage suffered a back injury, while the other two guards were treated for minor injuries at local hospitals and released.

The Bristol County facility houses a total of 700 inmates in units ranging from minimum to maximum security.
