April 17, 2001 (ELGIN, Ill.) – Prosecutors in Illinois may seek the death penalty for a man who allegedly gunned down a bartender and patron after he was thrown out of a tavern.
Investigators say that Luther Casteel, 42, wounded 16 other people in a shooting spree at JB’s Pub early Saturday morning. Casteel allegedly returned to the bar with four weapons after he was ejected for harassing patrons.
Casteel was charged Saturday with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder. Authorities say that he has a long violent record going back to his teenage years.
His alleged arsenal included an old shotgun, a 12-gauge shotgun, a .38-caliber revolver and a 9 mm semiautomatic pistol. Investigators are not sure how Casteel acquired the weapons.
