(WAUKEGAN, Ill.) – An Illinois sheriff’s deputy is behind bars, charged with obstructing an investigation into the disappearance of a business associate.

Rick Spiers, 51, of Waukegan allegedly told employees at a car dealership to destroy documents for a February car auction that bore the name of John Michael Basham of Kenosha. Spiers is one of the owners of the dealership.

Basham was last seen at the dealership in Winthrop Harbor. His body was found a few weeks later in a ditch near the auction in Indiana.

Spiers, a Lake County deputy for 27 years, served as a court security officer.
