Video: Man runs from police, blames 'schizophrenia'

Dashcam video shows a man claiming mental illness made him run

By PoliceOne Staff

VAN BUREN — A suspect who fled police on a motorcycle during a traffic stop over the weekend said he did so because he did not believe it actually existed.

Dashcam video shows a man, identified as Nicky Hunter, claiming a mental illness is what made him run from officers when they pulled him over for not having a license plate on his motorcycle.

Detective Jonathan Wear said officers cannot confirm his actual mental state, but that he was claiming schizophrenia.

"I'm schizophrenic. I didn't know if it was real or not," Hunter said.

Hunter reached speeds of up to 100 mph while fleeing the officers, and when the chase ended, police ordered him to get on the ground. He faces charges of driving without a driver's license or insurance, and police found that Hunter had an outstanding felony warrant from a neighboring county.

The local news video comes from Gamut News.
