GREENWATER - A police dog missing for nearly a week was found Monday evening in a rugged forested area near Mount Rainier.

Ferro, a black and tan German shepherd, was cold and wet but otherwise OK, Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said.

A volunteer found the dog at just about the same spot where the animal set out to chase two men who crashed a stolen car last Tuesday night.

Ferro's handler, Deputy John Reding, lost sight of the dog in the woods while deputies helped Enumclaw police chase the suspected car thieves. One man was caught and the other was identified and believed out of the woods.

Since then, volunteers on foot and horseback and in four-wheel-drive vehicles have been searching for Ferro.

Ferro is one of four Pierce County sheriff's dogs. He is popular with school children and has appeared on episodes of the television show "Cops," Troyer said earlier.
