Two officers killed in accident
ALBANY, Ore. (AP) - A pickup truck veered onto the shoulder of an interstate, then struck and killed two law enforcement officers and critically injured a third, authorities said.
The officers had stopped Tuesday night to help a motorist along Interstate 5 in Albany, about 70 miles south of Portland.
A female state trooper and an Albany police officer died at the scene, said Lt. Gregg Hastings, the state police spokesman.
The third officer, a sergeant with Oregon State Police, was in critical
condition at Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland, a nursing supervisor said.
All three officers were standing near their cars when the pickup crossed onto the shoulder and struck them, Hastings said.
The pickup truck driver was taken to a hospital but his injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, Hastings said. No charges were immediately filed against him.
No one in the other vehicle was injured.
