After more than 24 hours of emergency medical care, a Medina police officer remains in critical condition after a shootout Tuesday that left a man dead. Lt. Mike Russell is recovering from gunshot wounds suffered in a shootout at a Medina pharmacy Tuesday.

State Police now say Lt. Russell was shot four times by 38-year old Peter Novellin of Albion after he approached the man at Rosenkrans Pharmacy.

Lt. Russell approached Novellin about a pharmacist's claim that Novellin had submitted a forged prescription.

State Police say after Novellin fired on him, Lt. Russell returned fire and hit Novellin twice.

Novellin died at Medina Memorial Hospital.

Lt. Russell remains in critical condition at Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo.
