Suspects Allegedly Tried To Strangle Patrolman

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., 7:40 a.m. (September 21, 2001) -- Two Springfield men have been ordered held on $25,000 on charges of beating and attempting to strangle a Springfield patrolman with his radio microphone cord.

Timothy Redmond, 21, and 22-year-old Michael Caron pleaded innocent at their arraignments Thursday in Springfield District Court on attempted murder and other charges.

Detective Lt. William Noonan said that Patrolman David Barton was attacked about 2 a.m. Thursday after he pulled over a car and saw what appeared to be bags of cocaine inside. Barton was released after treatment at Baystate Medical Center.

Noonan said that he had called in his location and responding officers pursued and captured the men.
