GREENVILLE, N.C. — Greenville police released dash cam that shows the fatal shooting of an armed robbery suspect.
Cpl. Scott Johnson pulled over John Wainright, 36, after Wainwright reportedly robbed a Rite Aid store in April, according to WCTI. Sources said Johnson was unaware the vehicle was suspected in the robbery until he was told by witnesess.
In the video, Wainwright is seen running toward a GMC Sierra Z71 with Johnson close behind, gun raised. Police said Johnson — unaware the vehicle was suspected in the robbery until later being told by witnesses — discharged four shots, striking Wainright in the upper torso.
According to an investigation, Wainright was trying to access the gun in the backseat of the vehicle, and it did not appear that he was attempting to drive away.
Witnesses at Rite Aid said that during the robbery, Wainright demanded prescription pills. He was a frequent customer of the store, a pharmacist said.
