Police Shoot and Kill Man in Westport

Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Police shot and killed a gun-wielding man late Sunday in the Westport entertainment district, authorities said, as St. Patrick's Day festivities were winding down.

Security officers spotted the man, believed to be in his 40s, armed with a handgun outside a nightclub about 11 p.m., police Capt. Cy Ritter said.

The suspect then ran about a block from the scene and was spotted by police. The man pointed the gun at the officers and yelled at them, Ritter said. The suspect then ran into the middle of the street, again yelling and pointing his weapon.

That's when police opened fire. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not immediately released.

The shooting remained under investigation early Monday, and information on the number of officers involved in the shooting and the number of shots fired was not available.

The many clubs and bars in the midtown Westport area draw some of their largest crowds of the year on St. Patrick's Day.
